AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Senator Royce West announced today that he has earned the endorsements of Texas Sen. Kirk Watson, Texas Rep. Eddie Rodriquez, Texas Rep. Gina Hinojosa, Texas Rep. Celia Israel, Texas Rep. Sheryl Cole, Former Texas Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos, and Travis County Commissioner Jeff Travillion. Each endorser cited West’s extensive record of taking action on halting gun violence, investing in public education, and working to expand healthcare coverage.
Rodriquez was first elected to the State Legislature in 2002 and was re-elected to his seventh term in 2014, serving East Ausin and Southeast Travis County. As the Vice Chair of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, Rodriquez has championed policies centered on public education, housing, and job creation. He has served with West in the Texas Legislature for almost two decades and have worked closely together.
“I am proud to endorse Royce West in this race because he knows how to get things done and always puts people before politics,” Rodriquez said. “Royce loves Texas and has spent his career fighting to expand opportunity for all Texans, especially those from underserved communities—he is the champion that Texans need in the U.S. Senate.”
In addition to Rodriquez and several other local electeds, Israel—who was also elected to serve Austin in 2014—has officially backed West’s campaign. As a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security & Public Safety, Israel has fought for voting rights and increasing public safety.
“Now more than ever, Texas needs leaders like Senator West to take their years of experience to the next level,” Israel said. “I’m excited to support him to help us bring mainstream Texas values back to the state we all love.” West’s announcement today is the second round of endorsements in a statewide tour that will continue to highlight support from dozens of high-profile officials.
“I am honored to have the support of these trailblazers in Austin,” West said. “We are all dedicated to the same thing: rejecting Trump’s far-right agenda and fighting for a future that benefits all of us. As Americans, and as Texans, we must stand together and demand quality healthcare coverage, a robust education system, and the ability to go to work or school without the threat of gun violence.”
