The following is the statement of Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas) on the delay in Senate action concerning emergency paid sick leave for Coronavirus sufferers:
“It is sad that Senate Republicans would hold up a vote on emergency paid sick leave for those impacted by Coronavirus (COVID-19). While I agree that the federal government should pick up the tab for this and not leave small businesses on the hook with an unfunded mandate in this particular emergency case, we shouldn’t wait until after the recess to get something passed.
Senator Cornyn has told the media the Senate may take up a consensus package after next week’s recess. People are suffering now. It is time to put away partisanship and do what is necessary to protect and care for the American people. This is why we need a U.S. Senator from Texas who knows how to build coalitions to get things done.
I call on Senator Cornyn to not wait until after a recess to work to get this done. Work across party lines, figure out the mechanisms for funding quickly, and make this happen.
Legislative bodies should not be so slow to respond when the health and welfare of the American people are at issue.”
