WACO, Texas — Texas Senator Royce West announced that he has earned the endorsements of McLennan County Commissioner Patricia Miller, Waco City Councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tempore Andrea J. Barefield, and Former McLennan County Commissioner Lester Gibson. All three officials cited West’s long track record of taking action on critical issues such as curbing gun violence, healthcare, and public education.
Miller was elected as the McLennan County Commissioner for Precinct 2 in 2018, and is the first woman to serve in this office. Since her election, Miller has championed policies for low income families and has fought for better roads and public education. She, and her predecessor Lester Gibson, are longtime West supporters and have witnessed his work first-hand.
“Senator Royce West has truly led a life in service to the broader concerns of all humanity,” Miller said. “At this time, especially in this national climate, Senator Royce West is the best person suited for this Texas seat in the United States Senate. I applaud the work of Senator West in creating legislation that aims to improve the lives of all people.”
In addition to Miller and Gibson, Barefield—who was also elected to serve Waco in 2018—has officially backed West’s campaign.
Barefield was elected to the Waco City Council to represent District 1 and furthermore serves as the Mayor Pro Tempore. In this role, she has developed and fostered the community of downtown Waco through economic empowerment and cultural preservation.
“There is a time for representation that is reflective of, and committed to the people it serves. Now is that time and Senator Royce West is that person,” Barefield said. “His legacy of championing criminal justice reform, grade school and higher education, fair wages, and voting rights has strengthened Texas for over 25 years, and that is the kind of leadership we need to represent Texas in the United States Senate.”
West’s endorsement announcements today kick off a statewide tour that will continue to highlight support from dozens of high-profile officials.
“I am honored to have earned the support of these incredible lawmakers here in Waco,” West said. “They understand what good leadership looks like, what it means to be committed to the people of Texas, and I am determined to fight on their behalf. Texans, and all Americans, deserve affordable healthcare, to earn a living wage, and to feel safe in their schools, shopping malls, theaters and workplaces. We are going to get things done for Texas and fight Trump’s agenda to dismantle all that we achieved before he took office.”
